SPANISH FORK — Another round of bear sightings over the weekend in Spanish Fork resulted in a bear being caught in a trap by Utah Division of Wildlife Resources biologists.

A 200-pound female black bear was caught in a trap Monday morning and DWR biologists believe it may be the bear recently spotted near the windmills in Spanish Fork Canyon.

They tranquilized the bear and did a health checkup, added a GPS tracking device, and placed an ear tag to keep track on whether this bear keeps getting too close to people.

Earlier in the month, another bear was spotted in Spanish Fork, and it too was trapped and relocated.

DWR officials said they like to be notified about bear sightings in proximity to neighborhoods and ask people who see a bear to keep their distance.

“If they do see a bear the message is don’t panic, but let’s not go up to it. It is a wild animal, let it be, let it continue walking, let’s not chase it, scare it or go and try to get too close to it, but just sit back, stay put and watch it walk off to where ever it is going,” said Riley Peck, wildlife program manager for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.

Wildlife biologists transported the bear far away from people to a place in Juab County. They said it is great bear country.
