(KSL News) A driver is in critical condition this morning after running a red light in downtown Salt Lake City.

Police say he was driving west on 1300 South near Main Street when he ran the light and collided with an oncoming SUV. Both vehicles slammed into a shed behind a Maverik convenience store.

Police say the accident serves as a serious reminder to drive safely, no matter the time of day.

Lt. Fred Lewis of the Salt Lake City Police Department said, "It's early in the morning. There's no traffic on the road. Sometimes people think they can just disregard the traffic laws and drive without obeying those rules. It's very important to always obey the rules at all times."

The driver and his passenger both suffered serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital. The driver of the SUV was not injured.
