WASHINGTON COUNTY — Two Cedar City men were killed in an early morning crash on I-15 in Washington County on Saturday.
At around 4:00 a.m., a gray Pontiac Grand Prix carrying three men was traveling northbound on I-15 in Washington County, according to Utah Highway Patrol. Near milepost 34.4, the Grand Prix came upon a slow-moving semitruck in the right lane of travel. The driver of the vehicle swerved to the left to avoid the semitruck, but was too late. The passenger side of the Grand Prix struck the left side of the semitruck and its steel rear bumper.
The impact from the semitruck tore through the Grand Prix, killing the male front passenger and right rear passenger on impact, UHP said. Officials said the semitruck and the vehicle continued traveling north after impact approximately another mile before stopping on the right shoulder. Once the vehicles stopped, both the drivers contacted police.
Nigel J. Chavez, 25, and Matthew Chavez, 26, both of Cedar City, were pronounced dead at the scene. Traffic was affected for about two hours.
Police said alcohol is being investigated as a factor in this crash.
