SALT LAKE CITY — A recent KSL.com article looked at five of the funniest comedies made in Utah. The list included popular selections like “Dumb and Dumber,” as well as more obscure fare like “Troll 2.”
Of course, these kinds of lists are never complete. There have been more than 900 films shot in Utah, and many of them have been comedies. So there were definitely some deserving entries that didn’t make the first list.
In honor of those initially neglected films, here’s a second look at some of the best comedies Utah has to offer.

“The Sandlot”
Utah locations include Salt Lake City, Midvale and Odgen.
Rating: PG
Sample quote: “You're killing me, Smalls!”
Who among us didn’t have a crush on Wendy Peffercorn? The experiences in “The Sandlot” have always seemed to resonate with audiences in a special way. So whether you grew up in the ‘60s or a different decade, it hearkens back to the simplicity of childhood. Perhaps that’s why it remains one of Utah’s most cherished films.
“Forrest Gump”
Utah locations include Monument Valley and Mexican Hat.
Rating: PG-13
Sample quote: “But you ain't got no legs, Lt. Dan.”
Based on Winston Groom’s beloved novel, “Forrest Gump" has to be one of the most successful comedies to ever feature Utah locations. It was the highest-grossing film of 1994, netting more than $677 million worldwide. And it went on to win six Oscars and be selected for inclusion in the United States National Film Registry.
“Maverick”
Utah locations include Lake Powell.
Rating: PG
Sample quote: “How'd you know I was bluffing? I didn't do any of my tells. I didn't shuffle my cards, I didn't pull my hair, I didn't even flick my teeth.”
This film adaptation of an earlier television series is known for its witty banter and lighthearted action. James Garner, the lead actor from the original series, returns to play a lawman. The movie belongs, however, to Mel Gibson. He absolutely nails the title character’s roguish charm.
“Joe Dirt”
Utah locations include Dead Horse Point State Park.
Rating: PG-13
Sample quote: “Hey man, you done with that apple core?”
David Spade’s humor isn’t for everyone, but “Joe Dirt” has garnered a loyal following. The film’s plot is simple: after young Joe gets left by his parents at the Grand Canyon (actually Dead Horse Point), he goes on a quest to find them. Hijinks ensue.
“Rubin and Ed”
Utah locations include Goblin Valley and Salt Lake City.
Rating: PG-13
Sample quote: “My cat can eat a whole watermelon.”
Few films from Utah are as polarizing as “Rubin and Ed.” To some, it’s a hilarious gem. To others, it’s a tedious waste of time. The plot involves Rubin’s journey to bury his cat. Crispin Glover is fascinating in the lead role and positively bizarre. He actually went on David Letterman’s show once in a Rubin-like character, and let’s just say, it didn’t go over well.
