MIDVALE — Heavy rain caused several problems in Midvale on Monday afternoon.
About 54 residents were displaced after 16 units at The Calvaras apartment complex, 7940 S. Main, were flooded.
A motorist also got stuck under an underpass at 7800 S. State after driving into a deep puddle of water.
An officer carried the female driver from her waterlogged car. No injuries were reported, but the car had to be towed out of the water.
"When we have the amount of water come down like we did today in a short period of time, you can't mitigate, and you're going to have standing water," said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce. "We always advise people to never drive through deep water, especially when it's running."
As for the 54 apartment residents, they were evacuated when water trapped in the window wells overflowed into their units, said Rich Woodruff, spokesman of the American Red Cross in Utah.
Woodruff said the flooding made the units "uninhabitable," so Red Cross volunteers planned to aid the displaced by either setting up a shelter nearby or providing hotel vouchers for those unable to find shelter with friends or family.
"This is what we do," he said. "Anytime people get displaced by any kind of event, we're there to provide shelter and comfort."
Flood damage estimates were not immediately available Monday.
