BIG WATER, Kane County — Searchers on Friday recovered the body of a Montana man who drowned in Lake Powell.
Allen Robert Delay, 51, of Lewiston, Montana, was paddling an inflatable kayak Thursday in the Wahweap Bay area of Lake Powell near the Arizona border when high winds knocked him overboard about 1:49 p.m., said Cynthia Sequanna, a National Park Service spokeswoman assigned to the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
Delay was not wearing a life vest, she said.
Multiple agencies reported to emergency calls and searched unsuccessfully for Delay in the high winds. Weather prohibited crews from resuming the search until 2 p.m. Friday.
Delay's body was located by sonar at 4:51 p.m. Friday. Two hours later, his body was retrieved from 74 feet below the surface, Sequanna said.
In a statement Saturday, the Kane County Sheriff's Office urged all boaters to remain vigilant of changing weather conditions and to always wear a life vest.
