SALT LAKE CITY — The state House of Representatives lawmaker who pleaded guilty last week to communications fraud turned himself into jail Thursday.
Rep. Justin Miller, D-Salt Lake City, was booked into Salt Lake County Jail just after 9 p.m. Thursday night. Utah jail records show he was out of custody again as of Friday, although it isn't clear whether he was required to post bail.
Miller pleaded guilty Oct. 9 to second-degree felony communications fraud for taking close to $25,000 from Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams while working as his campaign manager.
Miller's announced his resignation from the state House of Representatives on the same day he pleaded guilty. His resignation will become official Nov. 11.
In June, McAdams accused Miller of stealing about $30,000 from his mayoral campaign. Miller had served as McAdams' campaign manager since late 2011.
Miller issued a statement earlier this month when he resigned his elected position, saying he holds himself accountable for his behavior.
"I understand the charges against me, and I take full responsibility for the mistakes I have made," Miller wrote in his statement. "While this mistake occurred prior to my legislative service, I believe elected officials should be held to a higher standard. It is that standard that has led me to choose this difficult, but necessary course."
Miller is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 18 in 3rd District Court.
