SALT LAKE CITY — A woman accused of putting her newborn baby in a trash can is still not competent to stand trial.

During a review hearing Monday in 3rd District Judge Elizabeth Hruby-Mills' courtroom, it was announced that Alicia Marie Englert, 23, is not competent to proceed with the court case against her. Another competency review hearing will be held Dec. 21.

Englert was charged a year ago with with attempted murder after police say she gave birth secretly in her parents' home and neglected the infant for two days before putting her in a neighbor's trash can on her way to work. A neighbor heard the baby crying and called police.

The infant was later placed in a foster home by the Division of Child and Family Services.

Englert's parents have contended since their daughter's arrest that she didn't understand what she was doing and that she has "special needs" and "doesn't process things correctly."
