ZION NATIONAL PARK — A fire started Thursday evening by lightning in Zion National Park is active and estimated at over 50 affected acres Sunday, officials said.

The fire is located on Cathedral Mountain in Zion National Park, just to the west of Angel's Landing, according to National Park Service officials. It is located on a mesa top with difficult access for firefighters, and flames and smoke are visible from the Angel's Landing Trail, a popular location.

The fire was estimated at 50 acres as of Sunday morning, according to officials. Its main movement is to the north, and due to the location of the fire it has not been deemed safe to place firefighters near the fire.

Sections of the West Rim Trail were closed Saturday as a precaution, mostly due to falling debris from the fire, officials said. All visitors were successfully escorted from the trail, which will reopen when firefighters feel there is no longer a threat.
