BOUNTIFUL — In its continual effort to make highway travel safer and faster, the Utah Department of Transportation has changes coming to the freeway ramps around the 2600 South North Salt Lake/Bountiful exit.

UDOT has a video on its website showing the new flow-of-traffic-style entrances and exits that are expected to ease traffic around the freeway. It will also add a new way for pedestrians to cross under the freeway.

The video shows how the new traffic will flow, starting with the southbound exit that will no longer exit on 2600 South, but will now end with three lanes — two going left, one right — that will exit on 800 West. UDOT expects the change to keep congestion down in the intersection on 2600 South. There will also be a new intersection and traffic light just west of the freeway on 2600 South and 800 West.

Now, heading west towards the freeway on 2600 South, there will be a new continuous flow intersection where the traffic will be on the left side of the road. The light will stop traffic before vehicles cross on the east side of the freeway. Once the light there lets traffic go, those heading southbound on the freeway will cross to the left side of the road and from there it’s a free run to the freeway.

These are the two biggest changes, focusing on reducing congestion at the interchange and under the freeway. There will also be some entrance/exit widening and extra lanes for getting on U.S. 89.

The pedestrian lanes will cross the eastbound lane and will have cars on either side of them while crossing under the freeway.
