Sam Penrod Reporting A Utah County man is in jail, accused of using heroin in the hospital while he was there visiting a new baby.
The man was in the hospital visiting his girlfriend and her new baby. Police say he was using heroin and there is evidence the new mom was also using drugs right in her hospital room.
It happened at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo.
A nurse became suspicious when a man, who may be the baby's father, left the patient room and asked for a private bathroom. When he came out two hours later, he appeared to be in an altered state.
Hospital security was called and later the police.
The man and his girlfriend then would not let police into the room for some time. When they did, officers found needles, filters and what's described as usable amounts of heroin in the hospital room.
Capt. Rick Healey, Provo Police Dept: "We are doing an investigation to determine if the baby was born addicted to heroin. That came about because of the situation, suspicious situation, at the hospital, where one person was arrested for possession of heroin."
But police suspect the new mom as well as another man in the room may have also been using heroin, and they could face charges. However police say, since Isaiah Banks admitted all of the heroin and paraphenila belonged to him, he was the only one arrested.
He faces felony drug possession charges and enhancements, because the hospital is considered a drug-free zone.
As for the baby, it is still in the hospital and will likely be placed in protective custody.
