DUCHESNE COUNTY — A man who went missing after hiking Kings Peak was found in good condition Wednesday morning.

Paul C. Young, 73, of Salt Lake City, was reported missing Tuesday morning after his family said he didn’t return home from a hiking trip, according to Summit County officials.

Young was last seen in Salt Lake City on Sept. 5 before he traveled to the trailhead. The family described Young as an avid outdoorsmen in good health. Summit County officials said Young was believed to have food and water and appropriate clothing for the area.

A Department of Public Safety helicopter and around 20 search and rescue members were deployed to Kings Peak Tuesday morning to search for Young. Young was located around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday and was airlifted from Kings Peak.

Summit County officials said the initial information was that Young was tired, cold and hungry but in otherwise good condition. A medical team was waiting to examine when once he was brought off the mountain.

Young left his home Friday to go camping, but did not have an exact plan of when he would return home or how long he would hike. He estimated the trip would only be a couple of days.

About 2 a.m. Tuesday, however, Young's wife became worried about the amount of time he had been gone and called police.
