9-year-old thwarts burglary, police say

An observant 9-year-old boy helped stop an alleged thief from stealing his dad's expensive bicycles Saturday, and helped police catch the man in the process.

On Saturday, Travis Ferran was working in his yard, near 113th South and the Jordan Parkway, just before 11 a.m. when a man walked into his open garage, took two bicycles with an estimated total value of between $9,000 to $11,000, off the wall and rode off on one while holding the other, he said.

"How could this be happening? I'm working right here in my yard, 50 feet away. And this guy walked into my garage, walked right past us, walked in my garage and had the nerve to take two bikes right out of my garage," Ferran said.

Sister missionary critically injured in Australia still in coma

The parents of a 20-year-old woman critically injured while serving an LDS mission in Australia have arrived in the country to be by their daughter's side during her recovery.

Sister Kendal Levine, who graduated from Stansbury High School in Tooele, had pulled off to the side of the road on Friday and gotten out to take a picture of a double rainbow near the city of Canberra. She was just getting back in her car when she was struck by another vehicle.

Levine did not suffer any broken bones, but doctors put her in a medically induced coma after noticing some bleeding in her lungs and head trauma.

Downtown events attract crowds of people in SLC

Stormtroopers, Greek dance performers, local foodies and University of Utah football fans were among the crowds swamping downtown Salt Lake City at the convergence of several large events Saturday.

Salt Lake Comic Con, the Greek Festival and Downtown Farmers Market brought heavy foot traffic to areas along 300 West, while the Utah State Fair and the Utes' game against Fresno State also saw thousands of visitors.

Tina Truong, a cultural performer at the farmers market, says she enjoys seeing people attending multiple events downtown.

1 home trashed, another spray painted in WVC burglaries

Police are investigating two burglaries that appear to be related where one home was trashed and another was spray painted Thursday afternoon.

The worst of the damage was discovered about 5:30 p.m. at a house near 2900 S. 7000 West when the homeowners arrived to find jewelry and a gun missing, and their house uninhabitable.

"They tipped over the fridge, they poured condiments and food and things like that all over the floor," West Valley City Police Lt. Matt Elson said. "They pulled pictures down off the walls, they put holes in the walls, they just trashed the place. Several thousands of dollars-worth of damage."

Two transported to hospital after police car crashes into another vehicle

A Davis County Deputy and a woman were both hospitalized Sunday after the deputy collided with a Dodge Durango while responding to a medical call, Syracuse Police spokeswoman Officer Erin Behm said.

Neither the deputy's nor the woman's injuries are believed to be life-threatening, Behm said, and the remaining passengers of the Durango were not injured.

The collision occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m. at the intersection of 700 South and 3000 West in Syracuse, Behm said.
