(KSL News) A messy night on I-15, as Utah Highway Patrol troopers scrambled to get thousands of plastic Wal-Mart bags off the freeway. Their number one concern was safety.
Sgt. Jeff Plank, UHP: "Any kind of debris in the road can be very dangerous to drivers."
Sgt. Jeff Plank, UHP: "There were bags everywhere. It could have caused a problem with people swerving every which way."
Troopers speculate as the truck driver merged onto westbound I-215 from I-15, he took the on-ramp too fast. And perhaps the load wasn't secure, something the driver could face charges for.
Sgt. Jeff Plank, UHP: "Most likely he was going a little too fast for that turn, the contents shifted, probably rolled off the truck."
Boxes full of Wal-Mart bags littered the freeway. Then cars ran into the boxes, spreading the contents everywhere. Troopers temporarily shut down the interchange from I-15 to I-215, and quickly cleared away the spill.
Sgt. Jeff Plank, UHP: "That's right, bagged it up."
So this morning there was no need to worry as commuters hit the roads.
