HOLLADAY — A 79-year-old driver who hit and killed a 3rd District Court judge after allegedly becoming distracted by looking at fall colors and driving into oncoming traffic, quietly settled his case a few months ago.
David Bertelson, of New Mexico, pleaded guilty by mail in May to reckless driving, a class B misdemeanor, in Holladay Justice Court, according to court records. He was fined $670 and placed on six months' probation.
On Oct. 24, 2013, Anthony B. Quinn, 60, was riding his bicycle up Millcreek Canyon when he was hit and killed by Bertelson's vehicle, which had crossed over into oncoming traffic.
The case was transferred to several offices before ending up in Holladay Justice Court.
Quinn was appointed to the 3rd District Court in September 1997 by Gov. Michael Leavitt. He received his law degree from BYU in 1980, where he served as note and comment editor of the BYU Law Review. Quinn also served as an adjunct professor at Westminster College.
