TOKYO (AP) — Even at 120 miles away, buildings in Tokyo have been shaken by a strong earthquake that hit Japan's northern coast early Saturday. It struck near the nuclear power plant crippled by an earthquake and tsunami in 2011. Some of the same towns that were devastated 3 years ago have issued evacuation advisories. The quake had a measurement of 6.8.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel says the U.S. is aware that Russia and Iran are providing fighter aircraft to help Iraq combat Islamic extremists. Hagel says Washington is not coordinating assistance with either Russia or Iran. A defense official said later that Hagel did not mean to suggest that Russian or Iranian pilots are flying in Iraqi airspace.
PATERSON, N.J. (AP) — Hundreds of mourners have gathered in Paterson, New Jersey, for a funeral for a 12-year-old girl killed when she was hit by a stray bullet while riding a scooter. Genesis Rincon was kept on life support so that her organs could be donated. Three young men face charges in her death.
MIAMI (AP) — One of two men charged in an FBI online chat room sting operation has pleaded guilty to terrorism-support charges. A federal prosecutor in Miami says Gufran Ahmed Kauser Mohammed pleaded guilty today to one count of conspiring to provide material support to terrorists. He faces up to 15 years in prison. He'll be sentenced in October.
DADE CITY, Fla. (AP) — A Florida judge has ruled that a former police captain charged in a fatal movie theater shooting should be released with bail set at $150,000. Curtis Reeves Jr. will have to remain at home, except to go to church, the doctor's office or the grocery store. He also must surrender firearms. Reeves is accused of killing a man over his apparent refusal to stop texting while previews were being shown.
