ST. PETERSBURG, Russia — No matter how tame a zoo animal seems behind bars, it is still a wild animal. So you would imagine that if a stray animal wandered into a carnivore’s enclosure, instinct would take over and the stray would be hunted and gobbled up, pronto.
But that isn’t the case with a European lynx in the Leningrad Zoo and a homeless calico cat.
The feline friendship began in 2008, when the calico made its way into the lynx’s enclosure in search of food, according to English Russia. But instead of finding a predator, the calico found an unexpected friend and a forever home.
The lynx and the calico have now been companionably living together for six years as arguably the most affable and adorable pair of roommates that ever was.
A recent video shows the cats are still a chummy pair as they affectionately groom one another. The English Russia even postulated that the calico considers the lynx to be its mother, and it’s hard to deny that theory when you see the pair together. It is truly a sweet and aww-worthy sight.
