OREM — A Utah County woman stopped to help an elderly couple in need — even though she was receiving medical treatment herself.

Jan Kunz was driving her daughter to a baseball game when they saw 87-year-old Doral Graff had fallen. They pulled over to help. Kunz rushed to his aid even though she was undergoing chemotherapy for stage 4 cancer.

“I had my oxygen in the back of the car,” Kunz said, “but I couldn’t be fast enough if I tried to grab my oxygen, so I ripped off my oxygen.”

Graff was walking home after attending his grandson’s Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony when he tripped on the curb and hit his head. Kunz held a diaper to his head to stop the bleeding near his eye, a tip she remembered from her first aid lessons.

Afton Graff, Doral’s wife, was helping a neighbor across the street and came back to see her husband lying on the ground.

“Before I could even hardly know what was happening, there was a car stopped with him,” Afton Graff said. “I guess a guardian angel she was. She got out of her car and took care of my husband as he was bleeding quite badly at the time. I was really worried.”

Doral Graff said he still experiences some stinging in his eye. He had surgery to insert a plate and reconnect the muscles between his sinuses and the eye.

The Graffs were inspired by Kunz’s act of kindness.

“It makes us feel like next time we see somebody, we need to stop and help them and offer our assistance whenever it’s possible,” Afton Graff said.

Her husband added, “We can’t give much assistance."

To which she responded, “But we can try.”
