SALT LAKE CITY — Rocky Mountain Power is raising awareness about energy efficiency, saying there are many things homeowners and business owners can do to save money.

Jamie Galileo is vice president of facilities for the Larry H. Miller group. He’s in charge of maintenance and energy efficiency, which includes the EnergySolutions Arena.

About 10 years ago, the company wanted to see if it could save money by being more energy-efficient. It contacted Rocky Mountain Power to do a business energy audit.

“We have technical expertise available to you to help identify what your opportunities look like, what makes sense for your operation,” said Chris Helmers from Rocky Mountain Power. “This is practical investment we ask customers to consider as they have their business plans. We all like our bottom lines, this improves the bottom lines of your business.”

Larry H. Miller Groups identified 30 projects in its buildings that could help save energy, including air conditioning units, lighting and energy management systems.

The cost of the projects, after incentives, was roughly $1 million dollars. However, the upgrades saved the company $300,000 per year in electricity. That means it’ll break even in about three-and-a-half years and continue to save money.

“If I spent $100 and you told me I was going to get that $100 back in two to five years and that you were going to give me income on the money forever, that would be a pretty good deal,” Galileo said.

Galileo said saving money isn’t the only benefit from the upgrades.

“We haven’t changed a lightbulb in two years,” Galileo said. “To a customer, they get the same experience. And at the same time, we’re doing things that are good for the environment and good for our business plan.”

If you're a business owner, Rocky Mountain Power will come to your business to do an energy audit for free.

The program isn’t available for homeowners, but Rocky Mountain Power said everyone can start saving electricity by turning off lights in rooms that aren’t being used and by switching to energy-efficient lightbulbs.
