ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. (AP) - Carl Maria von Weber's "Euryanthe" will be presented by the 25th anniversary Bard Music Festival this summer in what the organization says is the opera's first American revival in nearly a century.
"Euryanthe," composed in 1823, will be given five performances conducted by Leon Botstein from July 25-Aug. 3. According to the festival, the last American performances of "Euryanthe" were staged at the Metropolitan Opera between 1887-88 and again from 1914-15.
As part of the seven-week Bard SummerScape that will focus on "Schubert and His World," Bard said Monday the festival will conclude with a semi-staged performance of Franz Schubert's "Fierrabras `' on Aug. 17.
There will be a world premiere theater staging of John Banville's "Love in the Wars," adapted from Heinrich von Kleist's "Penthesilea."
Most festival performances will be at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard, about 90 miles north of New York City.
