SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A Utah company drilled into an underground reservoir in southwestern Utah that could power the first geothermal plant to be built in the state in 23 years.
Provo-based Raser Technologies plans to build the 10-megawatt plant in the Escalante desert. Ten megawatts is enough to power 7,000 houses.
Raser, a public company since 2003, is negotiating with public utilities for sale of the power.
Utah has just two geothermal power plants, both in Beaver County. One has been shut down for rebuilding. The other is operated by the utility Rocky Mountain Power.
