SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah bars and restaurants could serve liquor and wine on election days while the polls are still open, under a bill passed by the Senate.

Sen. Scott McCoy, a Democrat from Salt Lake City, says people should be able to have a drink at lunch or dinner. Under current law, people have to wait until after polls close at 8 p.m.

Utah's ban on serving liquor, wine and full-strength beer during elections goes back to when people voted in bars.

Senate Bill 167 passed in the Senate, 26-2. It will get one more reading there before it goes to the House.
