Brooke Walker ReportingGovernor Huntsman: "Clearly he took that invitation seriously."
Utah's Governor confirms a story Eyewitness News broke last night. Mexican President Vicente Fox is coming to Utah to talk about trade and immigration reform.
Governor Huntsman extended the invitation a few months ago. He hopes the historic visit will strengthen economic ties between Utah and Mexico.
Governor Huntsman says he also hopes the visit will be an opportunity to discuss a variety of issues. Among those issues are education, the economy and immigration reform.
Gov. Huntsman: "I told him I thought it would be important to visit some of the western states in which immigration has emerged as an issue."
Governor Huntsman met with President Fox in Mexico last July and soon will have the opportunity to meet with with him again, this time here. President Fox decided to come, in part, because Utah's approach to immigration policy has been progressive.
Utah is the first stop on a three-city tour that is expected to draw a lot of national and international attention. President Fox will also visit Washington state and California.
While Governor Huntsman expects the discussion to be the same in each state, he says the fact that the Mexican President chose Utah is significant.
Gov. Huntsman: "What's noteworthy is he's actually put us on the agenda of his trip to the United States, which I think says something very good about our state."
While here in Utah, President Fox will meet with various business and community leaders. He may even address a special session of the Utah Legislature and possibly meet with leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
President Fox, whose term expires in November, is expected to arrive here in Utah toward the end of the month.
