PROVO — In memory of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, students and staff gathered at Brigham Young University for the annual "Walk of Life."

Commemorative events for the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. slid seamlessly into celebrations of the swearing-in Monday of the nation's first black president, with many Americans moved by the reminder of how far the country has come since the 1960s.The event honors the courageous men and women who fought for equal rights.
Awards were given out to students who submitted their best work for an essay competition.
Cathy Stokes, a member of the Utah Aids Foundation, was the keynote speaker.
