SALT LAKE CITY — A man dying of cancer had his last wish granted last week when the director of "Star Trek" granted the man's wish to see the forthcoming "Star Trek" movie before his death.
A message from the man's wife was posted Dec. 25 on the social website Reddit. The 41-year-old man, known only as "Dan," was diagnosed with leukemia three years ago, and was recently diagnosed with an unrelated cancer.
"There is nothing left to do but make him comfortable," she wrote, adding that he has "weeks to live."
His wife said the couple had tickets to "The Hobbit," where there would be a 10-minute "Star Trek" preview for that movie due out in May. Instead, they ended up spending the night in the hospital.
"We, his friends and family, the love of my life - WOULD LOVE him to be able to see the Star Trek movie but even the 10 minutes of the trailer would be AMAZING," she wrote. "If there is anything any one of you or anyone you know could do to make this happen that would be an amazing, kind and generous thing. Please help."

The Reddit community responded, with some users contacting Paramount Pictures and others using their contacts in the TV and movie industry to try to get a special screening for Dan. The story was posted to movie blogs nationwide.
On Dec. 27, a man who identified himself as a friend of Dan's posted an update: "JJ Abrams just called Dan's wife and left a message. He's going to try to arrange a screening for Dan, either of the film or at least of the 9-minute promo reel."
The original poster put an update on the site on Dec. 29, saying Dan "got to see it a couple hours ago and loved it." He said he would buy an extra ticket for Dan when the movie comes out.
