SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City council has passed a controversial new fee, which means residents soon will pay more to keep the streetlights on.
When the city council first proposed adding a streetlight fee, some residents voiced opposition. But Tuesday night the council approved the proposal.
"(It will) give us enough of a funding source to pay for the current maintenance of the lights and to start to replace them with more efficient lighting," explained Councilman Carlton Christensen.
The fee will be $3.73 per home per month. Commercial, government and school buildings also will be charged a streetlight fee based on their street frontage.
The fee is expected to bring in $3.6 million per year to the newly-established Street Light Enterprise Fund.
