Wheelchair soccerWednesday, May 16 About a dozen children between the ages of 7 and 18 kicked off a new power wheelchair soccer session with a practice and scrimmage Wednesday at the Sorenson Multicultural Center.

The team's goals are to learn new skills, make new friends, and have fun playing their own version of soccer.

The power wheelchair soccer team is a collaboration between Shriners Hospital for Children, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation, and Ability Found. The kids use specially modified power wheelchairs to kick off, dribble and pass the soccer ball around the indoor basketball court.

Comcast scholarshipsWednesday, May 16

Utah high school seniors won $60,000 in scholarships from the Comcast Foundation in a ceremony on Wednesday. Comcast honored 35 recipients at the Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Awards Luncheon.

Each year the Comcast Foundation awards high school seniors $1,000 scholarships for college. This year at the event, four of the students were surprised with $5,000 Presidents scholarships, one student won $10,000 Founders scholarship and winning students had their names drawn for 10 netbook computers.

The VenturesFriday, May 18 The surf rock band popular for hits like "Secret Agent Man," "Pipeline," "Wipeout," and the theme song to "Hawaii Five-0" is performing at the Egyptian Theatre in Park City through Sunday.

The Ventures were inducted into the Rock & Roll of Hall of Fame in 2008, and have sold more than 100 million records.

Innovations 2012Friday, May 18

Ballet West's "Innovations" ballet opens Friday at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center.

The performance is a showcase for America's up-and-coming choreographers, and of new works by Ballet West artists.

Living Traditions FestivalSaturday, May 19

Salt Lake City has declared Saturday as National Kids to Parks Day. To celebrate, children ages 12 and younger are invited to experience Living Traditions Kids and explore various cultures through outdoor play and traditional arts and crafts from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Washington Square, 451 S. State.

Activities at the festival are colorful, educational and result in handmade crafts that children can take home, organizers said.

The Living Traditions Festival is a celebration of traditional folk and ethnic arts, and will include performing arts, a food market and crafts.

Bilingual poll worker applicationsSunday, May 20

The Salt Lake County Election Division says it needs poll workers who are fluent in Spanish and English for both the primary and general election days.

The primary election is June 26 and the general election is Nov. 6. Preference will be given to those who can work both elections and at any polling location within the county.

Prospective workers must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter, and be able to commit to a full day (6 a.m. — 9 p.m.). Mandatory training is required prior to each election. Workers will receive a $150 stipend per election.

Canyons enrollmentNow Through Nov. 1

To prepare for the district-wide reconfiguration in fall 2013, Canyons School District will hold open-enrollment application now through Nov. 1 for the 2013-2014 school year.

For students who currently attend school on an out-of- boundary permit, parents will need to submit another application during this open-enrollment window.

Open-enrollment applications can be accessed at any Canyons District school or the Canyons Administration Building, 9150 S. 500 West, in Sandy.
