NORTHERN UTAH — Three separate houses in cities across northern Utah went up in flames Friday morning, displacing at least seven people.
Kearns fire
Crews rescued one person from a house fire in Kearns, and families in Ogden and Magna are also affected Friday.
Fire was reported at a home near 4900 West and 5320 South in Kearns around 9:15 a.m. Friday morning. A man, who was in the basement, also placed a call to report that he was trapped and clarify his location.
"I am trapped," he told a dispatcher. "I can't get out. The house is full of smoke, I'm in the basement in the southwest corner."
In that call, the man reported the fire and, between coughs, explained his situation.
"I am trapped," he told a dispatcher. "I can't get out. The house is full of smoke, I'm in the basement in the southwest corner."
Firefighters went into "rescue mode" and were able to get the man out through a small bedroom window. When he first saw the window he told the dispatcher and notified her that it was broken open.
"How big is the window?" the dispatcher asked.
"Big enough for me to climb out," the man replied.
A recording of the 911 call indicates a shuffling sound and close to a minute later, a firefighter came on the line and reported that the man had exited the home.
The man lived at the home with his parents and a child, who was not home at the time of the fire. The Red Cross reported the family was able to find temporary housing with other family members.
Burningham said the fire caused significant damage to the first floor of the home and burned into the attic. He estimated that the home suffered about $75,000 in damage.
A pet cat and dog that were in the home at the time of the blaze were still missing.
Ogden fire
Just after 7 a.m., the Ogden Fire Department received a call about a house fire near 1000 Capital. The house, which had been converted into a duplex, had one family of four inside at the time. The other apartment is vacant. The family reportedly awoke to crackling sounds and the smell of smoke, according to the Ogden Fire Department. They quickly left the house and called 911.
Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire, which had spread throughout the house and into the attic, but the house is uninhabitable, the Ogden Fire Department reports. One person was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation, but no other injuries were reported.
Magna Fire
In Magna, fire crews responded to another two-alarm fire near 3500 South and 8150 West around 10 a.m. Crews were able to contain the fire, and it is unclear whether or not the house was empty at the time. No injuries were reported.
Damage from the Ogden house fire is reported to be an estimated $40,000. No word yet on damage from the other homes.
