(KSL News) The Utah Transit Authority is one step closer to federal funding for four new light-rail lines and a commuter rail to Provo.

The Deseret Morning News reports UTA signed a letter of intent, which officials call an unprecedented agreement between a state agency and the Federal Transit Administration. That's because federal funding is generally given on a project-by-project basis, not as a package deal.

The letter makes way for $500 million in federal funding.
