SALT LAKE CITY -- Many parents say it's about time. But some teachers still have concerns as the Granite School District looks to change all its year-round schools to a traditional schedule.
Granite spokesman Ben Horsley says with ten of the schools, it's a slam dunk.
"You can see by the population and capacity of the buildings that there is no need for them to be any longer on the year-round schedule," he said.
Horsley says in the past, they needed year-round to save money from having to build new buildings, but now that growth has stabilized the schedule doesn't make sense anymore.

"The numbers don't lie. There are some cost-savings associated with eliminating the year-round schedules with the increase in staff, transportation, utility costs and other things," he said.
Horsley says most parent feedback has been in favor of the traditional schedule. But it will mean an adjustment for teachers.
"Consistently over time our parents have been supportive of the traditional schedule. It's hard to schedule vacations and other things when you have your secondary students on a different schedule than your elementary kids," he said.
Still, Horsley says four schools will need some adjustments like portable buildings when they go back to a traditional calendar, but those populations are stabilizing as well.
The board will still review the boundaries and see if any adjustments need to be made after that. They've been gathering input from parents, teachers and the community, and will have three meetings this week. The board will decide in early December on the proposal.
The schools are generally in the Kearns, Magna and West Valley area.
