CLEARFIELD, Utah (AP) -- Many communities in Northern Utah are hunting for police officers and even raising rookie pay to compete with neighbors who also need cops. The Weber State University Police Academy says there are a lot of job openings right now.
The academy, which offers a nine-month program, has not had a waiting list for at least two years.
In May, Clearfield police tried to lure applicants with starting pay of $15.75 per hour. By July 15, it was increased 16 cents.
To attract applicants, the Layton Police Department is considering paying the $4,800 cost of attending the Weber State program.
