MANTI — An Ephraim woman who hit a deer in an accident that left her 2-year-old son dead earlier this year is now facing criminal charges in connection with the incident.

Brandi Roberts, 35, is facing charges of possession or use of a controlled substance, a third-degree felony, reckless endangerment and negligent homicide, both class A misdemeanors, driving with a measurable controlled substance in the body, a class B misdemeanor and failure to use a child restraint device, an infraction.

Roberts' 2-year-old son, Christian, was killed March 22 when the car she was driving struck a deer while traveling south on U.S. 89 near Manti.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, no one in the vehicle was wearing seatbelts and the toddler was not in a child safety device.

Troopers said the child was crawling onto the lap of a 13-year-old front-seat passenger when the car hit the animal, causing the airbags to open and killing the child.

The 13-year-old suffered a broken wrist. Another 10-year-old passenger was injured in the crash.
