SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A new shorter school week is working well for one school district.
Officials in the Rich School District say a four-day school week is reducing student and teacher absences. But it remains to be seen if the short week affects scores on state-required tests.
Three members of the district delivered a report to the state Board of Education's Law and Policy Committee yesterday. They say they have no negatives to report from the change.
The district received permission from the state board in January 2006 to implement a four-day week as a three-year trial program.
The reason for the decision was athletic events during the week, and the long-distance students and coaches would have to travel for competitions -- often missing one day of school.
