SALT LAKE CITY -- For the 1.5 billion Muslims throughout the world, this is the holy month of Ramadan.

At the West Valley City mosque, believers welcomed friends and colleagues Saturday to join them as they ended their fast with an evening meal.

During this month of reflection and giving to those less fortunate, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset.

"It's really important for us to come together because as you know, we are still a minority in this country and in this state," said Noor Ul-Hasan with the Islamic Society of Greater Salt Lake. "It's nice for us to see that we're not alone in our prayers, not alone in our fasting and we have other people to join together to do this."

Those of the Islamic faith will continue their daily fasts for a month, then end with a celebration -- another opportunity for the community to join them.
