BOUNTIFUL -- Groom's cakes are making a sort-of comeback at weddings -- or at least, that's what one cake decorator is saying. She told KSL she's been busy making cakes for grooms and can't remember the last time she made a bride-only cake.
For cake maker Julie Hill, baking isn't really the career path she was originally thinking of.
Almost 10 years ago, after graduating college, Hill had a big decision to make.
Unlike her previous work in the courtroom, people getting cake is always a fun event. And if she can make people laugh and smile, she knows without a doubt cake was the right call.
"Should I go to culinary school, or should I go to law school? And we thought the no-brainer was law school," she said.
After spending eight years in and out of courtrooms, she decided her heart was really into cake.
"This is so much more fun than practicing law," she said.
Now, Hill is making all kinds of cake. She even started her own company. In fact, her company "Layers" is doing so well, it's about to move it out of her Bountiful basement.
"We're getting ready to expand with a bigger kitchen and, hopefully, a little bit more help," she said.
Hill has made hundreds of cakes in the past three years, but groom's cakes -- lately -- have taken off.
"There's been very few bride's cakes I've done recently that haven't included a groom's cake as well," she said.
Some of her creations include cakes that look like a fish, a fire truck, cowboy boots, a briefcase full of money, and a Nintendo. They look so good, you almost don't want to eat them.
Whoever said a guy can't have his own cake at his wedding?
"I think it's a fun way to kind of include the groom and the groom's interest or things they like to do together," Hill said.
Hill says unlike the courtroom, people getting cake is always a fun event. And if she can make people laugh and smile, then she knows without a doubt cake was the right call.
"Hopefully I can keep doing this for a long time," she said.
Hill says her cakes start at $100 and go up from there depending on how intricate the cake is.
