(File photo) OREM, Utah (AP) -- Kids of the four-legged and furry variety are not welcome in Orem's residential areas.
City council members on Tuesday voted 6-1 to deny an application from a woman who was asking for a zoning change to allow pygmy goats on residential lots smaller than one acre.
Holly Robbins was cited for having the small goats living on her one-third acre lot. She says the animals are like household pets, not livestock. She also wants her children to learn about sustainability and food production from the goats.
Opponents feared the goats would bring barnyard smells to neighborhoods and hurt property values.
Councilwoman Mary Street voted for the change. She says alternatives that allow residents opportunities for sustainable living should be considered.
