Sandra Yi ReportingPolice have arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting at Settlement Canyon Dam. A tip led police to the suspect, 18-year old Daniel Herrera.
Herrera and Martinez were involved in at least two confrontations at the dam, leading up to the shooting of 24-year old Richard Martinez.
Herrera didn’t say a word during his first court appearance this morning. He was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs and a bullet-proof vest.
Police arrested Herrera early this morning at a home in Tooele. They also recovered a .22 caliber gun, which they believe is the murder weapon.
Police say Herrera and the victim both grew up in Tooele and knew each other; they’re still investigating a motive.
Prosecutors say Herrera was at the reservoir Tuesday night. He and the victim had an argument. Herrera left, then came back. The victim’s friend, who was about 100 feet away, told police he heard arguing, then a gunshot. Martinez died at the scene.
Police say there were no witnesses to the shooting, but the community’s help led to a quick arrest. They are still looking for another person who may be a potential suspect.
Herrera, who has a criminal history as a juvenile, has been charged with murder. A judge set bail at $1 million cash.
