SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- Javier Morales scored two goals and Fabian Espindola had a goal and an assist as MLS Cup champions Real Salt Lake opened its season with a 3-0 victory over San Jose on Saturday night.
Morales hammered home a 35-yard shot on the bounce to open the scoring in the 14th minute, then scored again in the 54th minute with a curling free kick from the top of the penalty box.
San Jose's Chris Leitch was sent off on the play that set up the kick, having delivered a hard foul to Espindola.
Espindola's goal came in the 27th minute. San Jose defender Jason Hernandez attempted to break up a pass from Morales, but the ball went to Espindola, who chipped it over charging goalkeeper Joe Cannon.
