Rookie center Fedor Svechkov also scored and had an assist for his first career multi-point game. Filip Forsberg had two assists. Mikael Backlund scored for Calgary, and Dustin Wolf made 24 saves. The Flames have lost consecutive games for the first time since November.

Steelers look toward playoffs after finishing regular season on 4-game skid with loss to Bengals

Russell Wilson and the Pittsburgh Steelers don't want to talk about the past with the playoff approaching. The Steelers finished the regular season on a four-game losing streak after a fourth-quarter rally fell short, as Cincinnati kept its playoff hopes alive with a 19-17 victory Saturday night. Said Wilson: "I think the best thing we can do is get ready for the playoffs. It's a new season. That's the only thing that really matters anymore at this point." Pittsburgh locked up a playoff berth weeks ago. The Steelers are the third team in NFL history to enter the playoffs on a four-game skid.

Oilers use fast start to beat the Kraken 4-2 for their 3rd straight victory

just six seconds after the Kraken pulled goalie Philipp Grubauer for an extra attacker. Calvin Pickard made 15 saves to help Edmonton improve to 24-12-3. Viktor Arvidsson had two assists. Chandler Stephenson and Jaden Schwartz scored for Seattle. Grubauer made 28 saves.

Norman Powell scored 20 points, Kawhi Leonard added 12 in his first game of the season and the Los Angeles Clippers rolled to a 131-105 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. Leonard, who missed the Clippers' first 34 games with what the team described as right knee injury recovery, played 19 minutes. He was 4 of 11 from the floor, including three 3-pointers, along with three rebounds and one assist. Ivica Zubac had 18 points and 18 rebounds as the Clippers snapped a two-game losing streak. Trae Young led Atlanta with 20 points and 14 assists.

Laczynski gets 1st goal of season, Hill has 23 saves as Golden Knights beat Sabres 3-1

Injury scare for Naomi Osaka ahead of Australian Open

Naomi Osaka's fitness for the Australian Open is in question after the four-time Grand Slam champion and former No. 1 suffered an apparent abdominal injury while playing the final of a WTA tournament in Auckland. Osaka had won the first set of the final 6-4 against Denmark's Clara Tauson when she spoke to her coach Patrick Mouratoglou, the chair umpire and a tour trainer before deciding to withdraw. Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga sprained his right ankle and coach Steve Kerr expects the forward to miss some time. Kuminga was hurt in the closing minutes of the first half of Golden State's 121-113 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night when he tried to block a shot and landed awkwardly. He will undergo an MRI exam. Kerr says the injury is a "significant sprain." Kyle Anderson will play more minutes in Kuminga's absence.

Adrian Kempe scores late, and the Kings beat the Lightning 2-1 for a 4-game winning streak

The Los Angeles Kings beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 for their fourth consecutive victory. Mikey Anderson scored in the first period and Darcy Kuemper made 34 saves for the Kings while shutting out Tampa Bay over the final 58 1/2 minutes. Los Angeles has won 12 of 16. Captain Victor Hedman scored and Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 19 shots for Tampa Bay, which has lost three straight games for the first time in two months. The winning goal was created by Alex Turcotte, who capitalized on a turnover and roared down ice before dropping a pass to Kempe.

Karson Templin scored 18 points off of the bench to lead the Utah State Aggies past the Fresno State Bulldogs 89-83. Ian Martinez added 16 points for Utah State (14-1, 4-0 Mountain West Conference). Alex Crawford led Fresno State (4-11, 0-4) with 26 points.

Joe Burrow passed for 277 yards and a touchdown, and the Cincinnati Bengals kept their slim playoff hopes alive with a 19-17 win over the floundering Pittsburgh Steelers. Burrow also threw an interception and his NFL record streak of consecutive games with at least 250 yards passing and three touchdowns came to an end. But he did enough to propel the 9-8 Bengals to their fifth straight win and keep them in the mix until the season's final day. Cincinnati will earn the seventh seed in the AFC if Denver loses to Kansas City and Miami either loses to or ties the New York Jets on Sunday. The Steelers are heading to the playoffs on a four-game losing streak.

Ian Schieffelin scored 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting, Chase Hunter added 19 points on Saturday night to help Clemson beat California 80-68. Chauncey Wiggins scored 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting for Clemson (12-3, 4-0 ACC). Cal (7-9, 0-3) has lost three consecutive games and six of its last seven. Andrej Stojakovic made 11 of 15 from the field and scored 30 points to lead the Bears. Stojakovic scored Cal's final six points in a 10-3 spurt that made it 25-all with 6:29 left in the first half but Wiggins scored in the lane 20 seconds later to put the Tigers back in front for good. Hunter scored six points in a 12-4 spurt that gave Clemson a 12-point lead midway through the second half and Cal never again threatened.

Nikola Jokic had 46 points and 10 rebounds and the Denver Nuggets spoiled Victor Wembanyama's 21st birthday on Saturday, beating the San Antonio Spurs 122-111 in overtime. Wembanyma finished with 20 points and 23 rebounds for San Antonio, but was scoreless and without a rebound in OT.  Wembanyama has 57 double-doubles in 101 career games. The teams split the home-and-home series on consecutive nights.

Josh Giddey added 15 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, helping the Bulls cap off a feel-good day on a winning note. The team honored Rose, the Chicago product, at halftime after announcing in the morning that he will join Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen , Jerry Sloan and Bob Love as the only players whose numbers have been retired by the franchise. Karl-Anthony Towns led the Knicks with 44 points.

Sensabaugh scores career-high 34, Jazz rout Heat 136-100

Brice Sensabaugh scored a career-high 34 points, John Collins finished with 24, and the Utah Jazz snapped a five-game losing streak with a 136-100 rout over the Miami Heat. Walker Kessler had 14 points and 16 rebounds while the other Jazz starters Collin Sexton with 17 points, Lauri Markkanen with 15 and Keyonte George with 11 all finished in double figures. Nikola Jovic scored 17 points and Duncan Robinson finished with 16 for the Heat, who played without suspended star forward Jimmy Butler. Butler was suspended for seven games on Friday over what the club calls conduct detrimental to the team.

The game was tied at halftime before the Aggies opened the second half with a 15-2 run to make it 52-39 with about 14 ½ minutes left. Phelps led the way in that stretch with six points and a steal.

Dach, Caufield score in shootout to lift the Canadiens 2-1 over the Avalanche

Kirby Dach and Cole Caufield scored in the shootout, Jakub Dobes had 22 saves in regulation, and the Montreal Canadiens beat the Colorado Avalanche 2-1 on Saturday night. Caufield had the regulation goal for Montreal, which wrapped up its road trip with a 4-2 mark. Mackenzie Blackwood made 23 saves but could only stop one of three Canadiens in the shootout. Colorado had its season-high six-game winning streak snapped.

Touchdown Tommy! Montana State's Mellott wins Walter Payton Award as top FCS offensive player

Montana State quarterback Tommy Mellott won the Walter Payton Award as the Football Championship Subdivision offensive player of the year Saturday night, two days before the top-ranked Bobcats face North Dakota State in the title game. Called Touchdown Tommy,  the speedy Mellott edged North Dakota State quarterback Cam Miller and Southern Utah running back Targhee Lambson in voting announced at the FCS Awards Banquet in Frisco, Texas. Mellott has led Montana State to a 15-0 record. The senior from Butte, Montana, topped The Associated Press FCS All-America team and was the Walter Camp FCS Player of the Year. He leads the division in passing efficiency and points responsible for. Montana State and North Dakota State are set to meet Monday night at Toyota Stadium.

Dmitri Voronkov scored two goals and the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the St. Louis Blues 6-4. Kirill Marchenko, Adam Fantilli, Mathieu Oliver and Mikael Pyyhtia also scored for the Blue Jackets, who are 5-2-1 in their last eight. Ivan Provorov and Sean Monahan each had three assists, Zach Werenski had two, and Elvis Merzilikins stopped 29 shots. Brayden Schenn, Jordan Kyrou and Cam Fowler each had a goal and an assist for St. Louis, and Colton Parayko also scored. Filip Gustavsson makes 20 saves in the Wild's 4-0 victory over the Hurricanes

Filip Gustavsson made 20 saves for his third shutout this season, Marco Rossi had four assists and the Minnesota Wild beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-0 on Saturday night. The Wild improved to 16-5-2 when scoring first this season as Mats Zuccarello beat Pyotr Kochetkov on a slap shot for a 1-0 lead with 6:57 left in the first period. Zuccarello, who also assisted on Joel Eriksson Ek's tip-in goal on the power play in the second period, added an empty net goal with 3:46 remaining. Matt Boldy also scored in the third. The short-handed Wild won their third consecutive game despite missing leading scorer Kirill Kaprizov and captain Jared Spurgeon.

Red Wings soar past Jets 4-2 for fourth straight win

Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond each scored power-play goals to help lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday night that extended their winning streak to a season-high four games. Larkin added an empty-net goal and Alex DeBrincat also scored for Detroit. Raymond and Patrick Kane contributed a pair of assists and Moritz Seider had three assists. Alex Lyon made 21 saves for the Red Wings. Josh Morrissey and Nikolaj Ehlers scored for the Jets. Leonard played 19 minutes and scored 12 points in his season debut Saturday night to help the Clippers beat the Atlanta Hawks 131-105.The six-time All-Star forward missed the Clippers' first 34 games with what the team described as right knee injury recovery. It was his first NBA game action since Game 3 of the Clippers' Western Conference first-round playoff series against Dallas on April 26.

Cunningham scores a season-high 40 and Pistons win 3rd straight, 119-105 over Timberwolves

Cade Cunningham scored a season-high 40 points and the Detroit Pistons overcame Anthony Edwards' career-high 53 points to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 119-105. Cunningham, who also had nine assists, set his previous season high when he scored 35 against Milwaukee on Nov. 13. Edwards' previous career high was 51 points against Washington on April 9 last season. His 3-pointer with 9:25 remaining tied his career best but he didn't score again until 22 seconds remained. Malik Beasley had 23 points as the Pistons won their third straight and sixth in the last seven games. Julius Randle was the only other Minnesota player in double figures with 17.

Haliburton also had eight assists and, for the second straight game, did not commit a turnover. Indiana has won three of its last four to even its overall record at 18-18. Zack Austin blocked two shots to become the fourth player in NCAA history to total 1,200 points, 600 rebounds, 175 3-pointers and 200 blocks over a career. Maxime Raynaud scored 21 to lead the Cardinal (9-5, 1-2), who opened their first ACC season with three straight road games.

Jaguars, Colts try to salvage something from disappointing seasons

Indy remains hopeful starting quarterback Anthony Richardson can return from the back spasms that kept him out last week so they can get one more glimpse at the progress he's made this season. Jaguars rookie receiver Brian Thomas Jr. hopes to keep climbing the rookie receiving charts. And, of course, everyone wants to go out a winner.

Davis, Watkins lead second-half surge and Florida State defeats Syracuse 90-74

Daquan Davis scored 18 points, Jamir Watkins added 16 and Florida State rolled past Syracuse in the second half, defeating the Orange 90-74. Florida State scored 54 points in the second half, shooting 57% and making 18 free throws. Florida State scored 12 points in the first 3 minutes of the second half to build a 48-39 lead. Five players scored for the Seminoles in an 11-2 run that pushed their lead to 68-55 with 8 1/2 minutes to go. Chris Bell, Lucas Taylor and Donnie Freeman hit 3-pointers to get Syracuse within 73-66 near the 5-minute mark but Florida State began to cash in at the free-throw line. Watkins made 5 of 8 from the line down the stretch and Davis made 6 of 6.

Led by Kaleb Banks' 24 points, the Tulane Green Wave defeated the UTSA Roadrunners 92-63. Rowan Brumbaugh scored 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting for Tulane (8-7, 2-0 American Athletic Conference). Raekwon Horton led the way for UTSA (6-7, 0-1) with 17 points, nine rebounds and three steals.

Barnes wins San Vicente Stakes as trainer Bob Baffert goes 1-2 in Kentucky Derby prep at Santa Anita

Barnes defeated stablemate Romanesque by 5 1/2 lengths to win the $200,000 San Vicente Stakes for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert in a field of Kentucky Derby hopefuls at Santa Anita. Ridden by Juan Hernandez, Barnes ran seven furlongs in 1:22.15. He paid $4, $2.80 and $2.10 as the slight even-money favorite. Barnes improved to 2-0. He was purchased for $3.2 million as a 2-year-old by owner Amr Zedan. Romanesque, also trained by Baffert, returned $5.20 and $2.40. Bullard was another half-length back in third and paid $2.10 to show.

Freeman leads Arizona State dismantling of Colorado in 81-61 win

BJ Freeman scored 19 points and Arizona State seized control early and cruised to an 81-61 win over Colorado. Colorado reserve Trevor Baskin scored 23 points. Alston Mason's 3-pointer just under two minutes in put Arizona State ahead 8-6 and the basket ignited a 14-2 Sun Devils run over the next six minutes for a 19-8 lead. Colorado's Harrison Carrington stopped the hemorrhaging briefly with a 3 with 10:43 left before halftime, but a 13-0 ASU outburst in a little more than two minutes made it 32-11 with 7:52 before intermission.

Hideki Matsuyama and Collin Morikawa put on quite the show at Kapalua. Matsuyama set a personal best with 11 birdies for his round of 62. He still only leads by one shot because Morikawa also shot a 62. They were neck-and-neck all afternoon in calm conditions at The Sentry. Matsuyama set a 54-hole scoring record at 27-under 192. The Plantation course at Kapalua was built with the wind in mind. There was barely a breeze on the mountainous course overlooking the Pacific. Thomas Detry shot 65 and says it felt like a steady round. He was five shots behind.

Ravens wrap up the AFC North with a 35-10 rout of Cleveland; Jackson surpasses 4,000 yards passing

Lamar Jackson threw two touchdown passes, and the Baltimore Ravens won the AFC North for the second straight season, clinching the division with a 35-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns. The Ravens will open the playoffs at home against either the Los Angeles Chargers or Pittsburgh Steelers. Baltimore was two games behind the Steelers in the division before winning its final four to finish on top. Cleveland ended a dreadful season with six straight losses. Both Bailey Zappe and Dorian Thompson-Robinson took snaps at quarterback in the finale. Neither could move the ball much.

for the title Sunday night. Finland beat the United States 4-3 in overtime in group play. Boston College teammates Ryan Leonard and Gabe Perreault each had a goal and an assist for the Americans. Minnesota's Oliver Moore also scored, and Michigan State's Trey Augustine made 26 saves. In the first semifinal, Benjamin Rautiainen scored on a power play at 9:22 of overtime to lift Finland past Sweden.

Reynolds worked off the dribble from the left side to the right, ducked inside and hit a one-hander off the glass for the go-ahead basket with 12.8 seconds remaining. A 3-pointer from Max Jones gave the Wildcats a 62-56 lead near the 3-minute mark of the second half but the Wildcats did not score again. A tip-in by Vasean Allette and a 3 from Brendan Wenzel made it 62-61 with 1:17 left. After Kansas State missed a one-and-one opportunity with 24 seconds left, Reynolds put the Horned Frogs ahead and K-State's Dug McDaniel was unable to finish a contested layup before time ran out during the battle for the rebound.

Brown, the Bengals' leading rusher, did not practice all week after he got hurt during an overtime victory over Denver. Brown, who has rushed for a team-high 990 yards and scored 11 combined touchdowns, had been listed as questionable on the final injury report. The 8-8 Bengals, winners of four straight, need a victory over the Steelers and losses on Sunday by Miami and Denver to clinch a playoff spot.

Virginia had won 18 of the previous 19 matchups and leads the all-time series 24-6. Kelsey was hired after head-coaching stops at Winthrop (2012-21) and Charlotte (2021-24). Smith made 5 of 10 from 3-point range. Traore came off the bench to sink 6 of 10 shots and grab eight rebounds as Louisville controlled the boards 42-25.

Chiefs finally depart KC for Denver amid ice storm after 4 hours spent waiting on the tarmac

The Chiefs finally departed from Kansas City International Airport for their game in Denver on Saturday after spending about four hours stranded on the tarmac amid an ice storm that blanketed the region ahead of an impending blizzard. The Chiefs tried to move up the flight as the weather bared down on them. But the plane they were expected to use was delayed in arriving, so the team had to stick with its mid-afternoon departure. Just before it took off, airport officials announced that all flight operations were suspended due to "rapid ice accumulation." A break between the line of ice and the arrival of snow provided enough time to de-ice the plane, clear the runway and get the Chiefs off the ground.

Lamar Jackson capped a sensational regular season with a rather ordinary performance. It was plenty good enough to set a pair of NFL records and lead the Baltimore Ravens to a second straight AFC North title. Jackson completed 16 of 32 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns. He ran for 63 yards, too, which certainly played a part in Baltimore's 35-10 victory against the Cleveland Browns.

Star WR Zay Flowers exits in the 2nd quarter for Baltimore with a right knee injury

Pro Bowl wide receiver Zay Flowers left Baltimore's victory against Cleveland with a right knee injury. The second-year receiver began grabbing at his right leg after a short catch-and-run in the second quarter. He was eventually able to get up and walk gingerly off the field, but the injury is a concern for the playoff-bound Ravens. Flowers has given Baltimore much-needed production from the receiver spot this season. He has caught 74 passes for 1,059 yards and four touchdowns. The 5-foot-9 Flowers occasionally puts his shiftiness to use in the running game as well.

The team says president and CEO Michael Reinsdorf informed the Chicago product and former MVP in person on Saturday that his No. 1 will be sent to the rafters sometime during the 2025-26 season. Rose will join Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Jerry Sloan and Bob Love as the only Bulls players whose numbers have been retired. The team says more details will be announced at a later date. The school announced in a social media post shortly before tipoff that associate head coach Chris Carrawell would lead Duke as the acting coach against the Mustangs. Scheyer is expected to return to the bench for Tuesday's home game against Pittsburgh. This is Scheyer's first time missing a game in his third season as head coach. SMU is welcoming one of the Atlantic Coast Conference's marquee names for the first time as a league member.

Penn State hopeful Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Abdul Carter will be ready for Orange Bowl

Sonny Smart, father of Georgia coach Kirby Smart, dies after a fall in New Orleans

Georgia says football coach Kirby Smart's father died early Saturday of complications from hip surgery after falling in New Orleans ahead of the Sugar Bowl. Sonny Smart fell while walking on New Year's Eve and fractured his hip. He was hospitalized and had hip surgery at Ochsner Medical Center, where he died surrounded by his family. A longtime high school football coach in Alabama and Georgia, Sonny Smart coached Kirby when he was in high school. He became a regular at his son's games when Kirby became head coach at his alma mater in 2016.

Man City turns corner with successive wins in Premier League as Arsenal and Chelsea drop points

Erling Haaland and Manchester City might be turning the corner after the team's worst run of results under Pep Guardiola. Haaland has scored twice in a 4-1 win over West Ham on Saturday. City has back-to-back victories in the Premier League for the first time since late October. It was a good day for Liverpool without the leader even playing. Second-place Arsenal was held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton and fourth-place Chelsea's winless run in the league extended to four matches after drawing at Crystal Palace 1-1. Liverpool leads Arsenal by five points and is nine clear of Chelsea. Alexander Isak scored in a seventh straight league game to earn Newcastle a 2-1 win at Tottenham.

Barcelona request to register Olmo is denied again by Spanish league

The Spanish league and federation have again denied Barcelona's request to register Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor for the rest of the season. The players were registered only through the end of 2024 and Barcelona failed to meet the league's financial fair-play rules by the end-of-year deadline. The league and the federation say in a joint statement on Saturday that even though Barcelona eventually was able to meet the salary-cap rules, the players can't be registered again after having already been dropped because of the missed deadline.

Thomas Tuchel begins scouting work for England and will be pleased with what he saw

Wearing a thick coat and a baseball cap, Thomas Tuchel has gotten down to scouting work in his new role as England soccer coach. The German's first task was watching Tottenham play Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday and he'll probably be pleased with what he saw. Two players likely to be in Tuchel's first squad got on the scoresheet inside the first six minutes: Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke in the fourth minute and Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon shortly after. Tuchel's contract officially started on Wednesday.

Brandon Austin, former US youth goalkeeper, makes Premier League debut and has a tough start

Former United States youth international Brandon Austin has waited around a decade for his first start for Tottenham. When he got it, the 25-year-old goalkeeper quickly found out how unforgiving the Premier League is. Austin possesses dual American/English nationality and once played for the U.S. under 18s. He conceded in the sixth minute of his senior debut for Spurs when England winger Anthony Gordon drove a low shot into the far corner for Newcastle to make it 1-1. It was the first shot Austin faced. Austin was playing because first-choice goalkeeper Vicario has been out injured and back-up Fraser Forster fell ill on the eve of the match.

Olympic champ Sara Hector wins World Cup giant slalom as former leader Federica Brignone falls

Olympic champion Sara Hector has won her second women's World Cup giant slalom of the season. Italian skier Federica Brignone has fallen in the first run. Hector finished 1.42 seconds ahead of the 18-year-old Lara Colturi of Albania to move top of both the GS and overall standings. The 34-year-old Brignone's hopes of extending her lead in the GS standings ended when she fell in her first race since extending her record as the oldest race winner in women's World Cup history at Semmering in Austria last weekend. The injured Mikaela Shiffrin didn't race.

PGA Tour moves toward changes to FedEx Cup finale. Finding a solution everyone likes won't be easy

Commissioner Jay Monahan wasn't kidding when he told the PGA Tour staff in his year-end message that everything was on the table. That includes what could be another massive overhaul at the Tour Championship to determine the FedEx Cup champion. Two tour officials says several concepts are being discussed to improve the format at the Tour Championship. Patrick Cantlay is on the tour board. He says it's important to find something exciting for the players and for the fans. He says some ideas already have been kicked around but nothing definitive. Adam Scott expressed concern for a head-to-head format.
