SALT LAKE CITY — Rocky Mountain Power is warning business customers to be on the lookout for scammers.
RMP spokesperson Tiffany Erickson said they got at least 40 reports of scam calls Thursday. The reports came in from businesses across the Wasatch Front and Cache Valley.
She said the scammers spoofed RMP's customer service phone number, so the caller ID showed a legitimate number. She said the scammers sounded believable.
“It’s really frustrating because what’s happening is they’re mimicking our automated system. So, when a customer picks up the phone, sometimes it will sound like it’s our system,” Erickson said.
Mark Rutledge said he got one of the calls at his business, AMF Collision in West Valley City.
“She said that I owed $980 for electrical and that I was behind on my payment and if I didn’t pay it, they were going to shut off the power in 45 minutes,” Rutledge said.
Rutledge suspected the call was a scam and did not lose any money.
Erickson said they are not aware of any customer who paid the scammers. She said customers should always look for red flags on calls like that.
“We’re not going to call and ask you for your account number. We’re going to have that. We’re not going to call and threaten you. We will work with customers who are behind on their bill, but we’re not going to threaten to shut off power,” she said. “You’re never going to get a call that’s going to surprise you out of the blue and say, ‘We are about to shut off your power. Pay us right now.’”
