CEDAR CITY — A 15-year-old boy was critically injured after he lost control of the ATV he was driving and was hit by a pickup truck near Cedar City Monday night.
The teen, who was wearing a helmet, was driving the vehicle north on Lund Highway about a mile out of Cedar City around 7 p.m., according to Iron County Sheriff Lt. Del Schlosser. The teen attempted to slow down for a vehicle turning right at the intersection at 1600 North, but lost control and was thrown from the ATV. The ATV then struck a pickup truck traveling south and the truck hit the teen who was bounced back into the road.
When emergency crews arrived, they found the teen partially under the pickup truck being helped by the pickup truck driver and other passers-by, Schlosser said.
The teen was flown to a hospital and is in critical condition.
The teen was driving on a designated off-highway vehicle road. Speed appears to be a factor in the crash, Schlosser said, but no alcohol or drugs are suspected.
The crash is still under investigation.
