THE THEATER — AMC Theaters will follow the franchise movie marathon trend with a 27-hour “Star Wars” film marathon ahead of the December release of “Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker.”

The theater chain announced Friday it will be staging a 27-hour, 21-minute marathon featuring all nine “Star Wars” films, culminating with “The Rise of Skywalker,” starting Dec. 18.

It looks like the marathon will just include the main episodic films in the “Star Wars” franchise and will forgo “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” “The Rise of Skywalker” is the final instalment in Disney’s current “Star Wars” trilogy, although future films in the franchise have been rumored.

AMC’s website doesn’t include details about how the movies will be shown. It’s not clear if they’ll be shown in the order in which they were released, or if they’ll be shown chronologically following the “Star Wars” universe’s storyline.

The website also doesn’t say how much the marathon will cost. Unfortunately, there are only three AMC locations in Utah: Layton Hills, Provo and West Jordan. But it’s a safe bet that other theater chains might follow suit.

“Star Wars” isn’t the only mega-franchise to see a concluding chapter (of sorts) in 2019.

“Avengers: Endgame” debuted in May, and Utah’s Megaplex Theaters staged a 22-film Marvel Cinematic Universe marathon before “Endgame” came out.
