WEST VALLEY CITY — Two men are in police custody following a fatal stabbing in West Valley City Tuesday night, officials said.
The victim, identified as 27-year-old Troy Carter, gave two men a ride, but they got into an argument near 4000 South and 3600 West about 9 p.m., according to West Valley City Police Deputy Chief Kent Stokes.
They were identified later Wednesday as Colton Kloepfer, 20, and Maison Pullman, 19.
One of Carter's family members had run into Kloepfer, who was an old acquaintance, earlier in the day Tuesday, according to a jail report for Kloeper. The two exchanged numbers and agreed to stay in touch, the family member told police in the report.
The family member told police Kloepfer contacted him Tuesday evening and the two agreed to meet up and smoke marijuana, according to the report. Kloepfer asked for a ride, and the family member then asked Carter to give them a ride and Carter agreed, the report states.
At some point during the drive, an argument ensued and Kloepfer and Pullman were asked to get out of the car but refused, police said. At that point, Carter was assaulted and stabbed multiple times, according to jail reports.
He had stab wounds all over his body and died at Jordan Valley Medical Center in West Valley City about 1:30 a.m., Stokes said. Police initially said Carter was 26 but later clarified that he was 27.
There were a total of five people in the car, Stokes said. The group met up at Delton Bowling Lanes and gave the two men a ride to Peachwood Park, which is where the stabbing occurred, Stokes said.
Kloepfer and Pullman then fled the scene, but police tracked them to a home near 5575 West and 5430 South in Kearns. Officers took them in for questioning and were searching the home for evidence Wednesday morning.
Stokes said the home is not where the two men live, but they happened to be there when police found them.
Both Kloepfer and Pullman later admitted to police that they stabbed Carter multiple times, according to their jail reports. They both went to hospitals to be treated for wounds following the altercation with Carter, according to the reports.
Both were booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Wednesday morning for investigation of homicide.
