WEST JORDAN — Police took a man and woman into custody Sunday morning following reports of armed robberies in West Jordan and Sandy.
West Jordan police initially said they did not believe the couple was connected to either of the robberies. But later Sunday, Sandy police said they do believe the man and woman were involved in both robberies.
At 7:50 a.m. Sunday, an armed man robbed the Murphy Express gas station at 3853 W. Campus View Drive in West Jordan, West Jordan Police Sgt. Dan Roberts said. The man had a BB gun and rode off in a car driven by a woman.
Sandy police Lt. Cory Hess said his department believes the man was also involved in another armed robbery at a Chevron gas station near 7800 South and Union Park Avenue, which occurred about an hour prior to the West Jordan robbery.
Sandy police responded to the Chevron robbery at 6:53 a.m., Hess said. Police were told a man entered the store, brandished a gun and demanded money, the left in a gold vehicle.
Hess said officers from Sandy and the Unified Police Department later found a gold vehicle at a Dollar General store, 74 W. 7200 South, in Midvale. Inside, officers found evidence from both the West Jordan and Sandy robberies in the vehicle, the lieutenant said.
The man and woman in the car were taken into custody. Hess said Sandra Ellis and Ethan Cope, both in their 20s, were arrested for investigation of aggravated robbery.
Cope was transported to a hospital following his arrest because he claimed to have swallowed some drugs, Hess said. Cope is expected to be booked into jail once he is released from the hospital.
