SYRACUSE — Officials Friday had not released the name or condition of a Syracuse man they say shot at police before officers returned fire Thursday evening.

The man was still alive Friday, but police provided no other information about the man or his condition.

Police said a woman went to the Syracuse Fire Department on Thursday to request assistance because her boyfriend "was acting strangely" and had "access to firearms. After being told to contact law enforcement, the woman returned home from the fire department, according to police.

"When she opened the door, she saw her boyfriend standing at the top of the stairs holding a long gun. He told her to leave, so she closed the door and used her cellphone to call 911," Syracuse police officer Erin Behm said.

Officers responded to the home at 2964 W. 2125 South and set up a perimeter around the home.

"The (man) emerged from the home and fired at the officers. The officers discharged their firearms in response to his actions, and the (man) was struck," Behm said.

Police did not say where or how many times the man was shot. The man was taken to an area hospital by medical helicopter. No officers were hurt in the incident.

One officer from Syracuse Police Department and two deputies from Davis County Sheriff's Office were involved. All are on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.

Neighbor Angel Hoskins said she watched the incident unfold from inside her home. After hearing police yelling, Hoskins said she saw a man exit the house.

"(He) had a gun aimed, and … he shot," she said, "and then the cops started shooting."

Hoskins said she left the window when her father told her to get down. When she looked outside again, the man had collapsed on his porch, she said.

"I've never witnessed anything like that. I didn't know how to react. I was super scared," Hoskins said.

Multiple agencies responded to process the scene and interview witnesses.

The Layton Police Department will take over the investigation, Behm said. Anyone with information about the shooting can contact Layton police at 801-497-8300 or visit the Layton Police Department Facebook page.
