OREM — A family who lost their home in a fire feels victimized again after burglars stole things from the damaged house.

Shauna Bushman's home caught fire Feb. 28, making it uninhabitable. Her husband and daughter, both experiencing medical problems, have been in the hospital. Shortly after the fire, while at the hospital with her family, she got a call that her home had been burglarized.

"I've gone through enough and to think somebody could actually go through and dig through your life after you've already lost everything. It's just been a hard road," Bushman said.

Preventing theft after a fire
  • Have your home professionally boarded and locked up with padlocks
  • Talk to your neighbors and ask them to keep an eye on the property and neighborhood for suspicious vehicles or people
  • Contact insurance company to see if they offer any type of security protection

Information: Salt Lake Fire Department

Bushman said the burglars rifled through what was left in the house, taking some electronics, which she thinks were damaged by water. She said she feels violated.

"It's like somebody had gone through my whole life, my childhood, my kids' lives. For what? Broken down TV that's full of water," Bushman said. "It's dirty and it's ashes, but it's my life."

Orem police Sgt. Craig Martinez hopes someone comes forward with information about who broke into the boarded up house.

"It's adding insult to injury," Martinez said.

Bushman is dealing with yet another problem: someone set up a bank fund to help the family, only there's been a mix up with the account number. So even after hundreds said they donated, there's no money in the account.
