Hundreds gather in cities across Utah to remember victims of domestic violence

SALT LAKE CITY — October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and hundreds gathered in Utah cities Tuesday to remember those victims whose lives ended too soon.

The statistics are staggering.

According to the FBI, a woman in the United States is beaten by her significant other or husband every 12 seconds. The events on Oct. 22 were designed to not only spark awareness, but bring comfort to those who are still suffering.

In West Valley, volunteers assembled care kits for women fleeing violent situations.

“It’s not just a certain section of society that is affected by domestic violence, but all of us are affected by it,” said Sharla Perett Hansen, coordinator for West Valley Victim Services. “I wish there was a right answer for every victim trying to get out, but domestic violence is complicated.”

In Utah County, bagpipes played as dozens lit candles and walked in remembrance of those killed.

“We are here tonight to raise awareness, to bring to people’s attention the seriousness of this devastating cycle,” said Ashley McCandless, whose friend Robie died as a result of domestic violence.

Robie’s husband strangled her to death in August 2017. She left behind three young daughters.

Her friends said there were warning signs, such as her husband keeping close tabs on her location and scrutinizing her bank statements.

Advocates with the Special Victims Unit said the women who come through their office are incredibly strong; they’re fighting a battle in an endless cycle.

“We are here to be a voice for those who aren’t able to speak anymore,” McCandless said. “I hope those suffering will reach out, talk to someone, and eventually escape from their abuser,” she added.

Hansen said the resources are in place and are just a phone call away.
