EARTH — “Men in Black: International” is not the best film of the summer, but it is a pretty good time at the theater

Here’s what parents need to know about “Men in Black: International.”

Sexuality

I was a little surprised by this category because I wasn’t expecting much of anything, but thinking back to the earlier "Men in Black" films there was a hint of this in all three. The amount of sex or sex-related discussion isn’t incredibly high in the film, but it’s definitely a factor.

Between humans sleeping with aliens and comments and jokes made about sex throughout most of the movie, it’s fair to say this category definitely helped “Men in Black: International” earn its PG-13 rating.

There aren’t any specific sex scenes or nudity, but rather implied sex and people lying in bed the next day. You also see Chris Hemsworth shirtless a handful of times, but what else is new with one of his movies?

Language

The language is pretty typical for PG-13 movies. There are no instances of any R-rated curse words, but there is at least one moment where one is almost said. Other curse words and insults are present throughout the film to varying degree.

While there was language in the film, none of it seemed too harsh to really stand out to me to make this category a focal point.

“Men in Black: International” is not an amazing film, but being sandwiched between some real letdowns this summer it’s a fun trip to the theater — thanks in large part to its infectious cast and nostalgic feel.

Violence

This category is kind of tough because there is fighting and violence from start to finish, but it’s almost all incredibly comical; and when blood is shown it’s some kind of alien goo that splatters all over. This could be considered graphic, but I’m not sure it will be seen as terribly offensive.

There are a couple of violent moments where people are melted and the aftermath is shown. The bodies aren’t recognizable and it just looks like a heap of melted plastic, but those scenes could seem pretty intense for some younger viewers, and one moment in particular is played to be frightening.

Substance abuse

One character is portrayed as borderline alcoholic at the beginning of the film and there are allusions to him using recreational drugs as well.

This is not a big part of the film and it moves on from it pretty quickly, but there is a party scene where the character is drinking and not being responsible, which leads to violence.

Conclusion

I think “Men in Black: International” is about what you would expect when it comes to content in a PG-13-rated movie. I was a bit surprised a time or two, but I’m confident in saying it earned its PG-13 rating and isn’t close to an R rating.
