MUTANT SCHOOL — The latest entry into the "X-Men" saga, “Dark Phoenix,” is now in theaters.

Language

I’m not sure why this has become a staple in the "X-Men" universe as of late, but one very clear use of the so-called R-rated word seems to pop up in these films now.

“Dark Phoenix” has kept that trend alive. In addition to this, there is a fair amount of language in the film — including different profanities, references to deities, and harsh language spoken between characters.

The language is on par with other "X-Men" films, but these films tend to be more severe in this category than films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Sexuality

The sexuality was somewhat toned down for “Dark Phoenix.”

The previous "X-Men" movies “First Class” and “Days of Future Past” had some strong sexual moments, and “Apocalypse” really loved revealing costumes, but the filmmakers seemed to dial that all back for this one.

There are nods to couples living together and maybe a few kisses, but that’s really it. Costumes seemed to be much more tasteful this go-around, and sex really isn’t a point or focus in the film.

Violence

I feel like a broken record saying it, but this is where the film really earns its rating.

It seems most PG-13 films love to push the violence envelope right to the edge of that R rating, and “Dark Phoenix” does the same. The standards for what is and isn’t OK for a certain rating have never made sense to me, but even moreso when it comes to violence.

As with most superhero movies, there is constant violence in this film. People get killed by the dozens; some are shot, others impaled; some are burned and others are the victims of helicopter and car crashes.

The body count is high, but there isn't much blood to speak of or any graphic depictions of gore.

Here are some reasons “Dark Phoenix” isn’t necessarily a bad movie, but definitely a forgettable one.

Tone

“Dark Phoenix” is exactly that: It’s dark. The entire tone of the film is heavy, and the moments of levity are few and far between.

A lot of heavy topics are dealt with, as well as emotional deaths and confrontations. Keep this in mind if you plan on taking younger viewers. The film could be very heavy for young kids.

Conclusion

The X-Men universe has always seemed to be a little edgier than its Marvel counterparts, and “Dark Phoenix” continues with that trend. The tone is dark, the air is heavy, the violence is constant and the language is strong.

“Dark Phoenix” earned its PG-13 rating and is more grown-up than the Marvel movies we’ve grown accustomed to.

“Dark Phoenix” is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, including some gunplay, disturbing images and brief strong language.
