SALT LAKE CITY — People who have appeared in court are invited to submit comments based on their firsthand experience with particular judges by going to a new website www.judges.utah.gov.
The Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission will use public comments to help formulate a public recommendation on whether each judge standing for election should be retained for another term of office.
The call for public comment is one element in a comprehensive judicial evaluation program administered by the commission. Other elements include how attorneys, court staff and jurors rated each judge; how courtroom observers evaluated each judge; and compliance with education and disciplinary standards established by the Judicial Council.
After all this data is compiled and discussed, the commission will vote on whether or not to recommend the judge for retention by the voters for another term of office. The commission’s final report and recommendation on each judge standing for retention in the November 2012 election will be available to the public by mid-March of 2012 on the website.
The judges standing for election in 2012 are: Kevin K. Allen, David M. Connors, Mark R. DeCaria, Michael D. DiReda, Scott M. Hadley, W. Brent West, Ann Boyden, William W. Barrett, Royal I. Hansen, Anthony B. Quinn, Christine L. Johnson, Derek P. Pullan, James L. Shumate, Eric A. Ludlow, G. Michael Westfall, Marvin D. Bagley, Edwin Peterson, Jeffrey R. Burbank, Janice L. Frost, C. Dane Nolan, Charles D. Behrens, Elizabeth A. Lindsley, Mary T. Noonan, Larry A. Steele and Shauna L. Kerr.
People can comment on any judge at any time; however, comments on judges standing for retention election in 2012 must be received no later than Nov. 1.
